Jessica and Jeremy Little own and run Sweet Grass Dairy in Thomasville, Georgia. Sweet Grass is an interesting combination of a farmstead dairy and a creamery. On their property, Jessica and Jeremy keep a herd of 150 goats and use all of their milk for cheesemaking in the creamery on site. They also purchase cow milk from Jessica’s parents, who own Green Hill Dairy nearby. Sweet Grass was originally owned and run by Al and Desiree Weiner, Jessica’s parents. The Weiners were conventional dairy farmers for years until they visited a dairy farm in New Zealand practicing something called rotational grazing. Upon their return to Georgia, they began the process of converting their dairy farm from a highly mechanized operation with confined animals into a setup that has their herd out on grass 365 days a year. Access to two types of high quality milk has allowed Jeremy, the head cheesemaker, to experiment with a variety of types of cheese including a mixed milk tomme. Their double cream cow’s milk cheese, Green Hill, has won first place in its category numerous times at the American Cheese Society’s annual judging and competition.
