Oswald Roth began making and curing cheese in Switzerland back in 1863. His family became known for quality and expertise in the cheese industry. His son moved to the United States in the early 1900’s and developed an importing company in New York City. This business, now known as Roth Kase, became the largest importer of European specialty cheeses in North America by the 1980’s. Fermo Jaeckle, a former Roth Kase executive, saw that the U.S. held not only great potential for imported cheeses but he saw an opportunity to produce fine cheeses and he partnered with two of the Roth family descendents to form Roth Kase USA Ltd in 1991. They rooted their business in Green County, Wisconsin, an area known for its great dairying landscape and also its cultural ties to Switzerland. Their cheeses range from those that reflect their Swiss heritage (Grand Cru Gruyere and Montanella) to products that resemble other European classics (GranQueso). All the milk is sourced from family farms throughout Southern Wisconsin.
