This farm began back in 1968, when Jennifer Bice’s parents, she is now the owner, moved to Sonoma to start a small farm and milk goats. They were absolutely part of the back-to-the-land movement happening on the west coast and as sellers of raw goat milk, they quickly developed a following. In the meantime, their children participated in 4-H and some of them became quite adept at caring for goats, regularly winning awards at annual competitions. Jennifer took over ownership of the dairy in 1987 with her late husband, Steven Schack, and they evolved the farm according to the vision they shared about offering a more diverse line of goat milk products. They began making and selling artisan cheese. Given her years of experience with goats, Jennifer also rose to the upper ranks of breeders for dairy goats in the U.S. Redwood Hill continues to be a pioneer in the industry in their efforts to make their company sustainable, i.e. running their milking parlor and creamery entirely on solar and also as an active partner in their local Land Conservation program that ensures the future of their farm as an agricultural property. Their line of goat milk products has expanded to include yogurt, mold ripened and aged cheeses, and most recently they’ve launched a line of lactose-free fresh dairy products under the label Green Valley Organics. As they have expanded cheesemaking considerably, they moved the cheesemaking to a separate facility nearby the farm but technically, this means they are no longer a farmstead operation.
