Rolf and Marieke Penterman both grew up on small (60 cow) dairy farms in the Netherlands. While they would have been thrilled to stay in their homeland, agricultural land is limited there and they were interested in starting their own dairy farm with the option to expand someday. They decided to move to Wisconsin to pursue this dream. In 2002, they moved to a property they purchased in a small, rural community in Northwestern Wisconsin and started up a dairy farm with a herd of Holsteins. The couple decided that they’d like to create a value-add product with their milk so Marieke went to Holland to study with a boerenkaas producer and when she returned in late 2006, she produced the farm’s first batch of Gouda. Since then they have developed a range of flavored Goudas as well as varieties of different ages.
