Carine Goldin is originally from the Savoie region of France. This is an area known for some of France’s finest cheeses including Reblochon, Tomme de Savoie, and Raclette. When she moved to the United States, she suffered from cheese homesickness and struggled to find American cheeses that reminded her of those from her hometown. Out of this desperation, she began experimenting with making cheese in her kitchen but it was always challenging for her to find goat milk — her favorite. She began to dream about having a farm with her own herd of goats and the opportunity to make cheese. In 2004, her dream was realized and she found a small farm in Oregon less than two hours from Portland on a plateau in the foothills of the Cascades. She worked over the next five years to grow her herd of Alpine goats and construct a cheesemaking facility. Licensed in 2009, Carine began with cheeses inspired by those of the Savoie and fitting for the milk from her goats. Goldin Artisan is a seasonal operation with the supply of milk and thus cheese dwindling in the winter months and coming back into play in the spring.
